TCO : Singing in Exile, Staying Together

Golden harp of our prophets, why do you hang silently on the willow?

[Chorus of the Hebrew slaves – Nabucco, Giuseppe Verdi]

We continue to invite you to contemplate Liberation.

This past autumn Toronto City Opera announced the Campaign for Live Opera, which included supporting our March 2021 production of Nabucco. We believe that the live experience is absolutely essential for the community and that digital experiences are no substitute.

We have been engaged in the complicated rehearsal process for Nabucco since last November and were preparing to present to you this March. It is moving to see how engaged the dedicated TCO Chorus and our artists have been in preparation. Now, for a second season running because of pandemic regulations, we have been compelled to postpone the rest of our season which included both Nabucco and Cavalleria Rusticana. We can’t even record a live performance as we did in November due to the myriad barriers placed before us by governmental restrictions. But we have come to the decision that we don’t even want to (only) record. We look forward to experiencing these timeless and vital works of art with you in the theatre as soon as possible in 2021-22.

This month we intend to showcase the artists you would have experienced in Nabucco.

Please support them.

As a special guest, we will also feature internationally renowned, Toronto born tenor, Charles Sy.

Saturday February 27 - 7:30 PM

We welcome any additional donation.

An authentic, interactive event: it will be hosted live by our TCO Artistic Director Jennifer Tung. As we did for our critically acclaimed TCO : Live in HD production in November, we will have recorded live performances from our artists. We developed the program according to what these professional young artists think is the very best of their repertoire, supported by our incredible Music Director and pianist Ivan Jovanovic. The program will include excerpts from Nabucco and a virtual performance by our TCO Chorus.

The program will be approximately 1 hour long. We will record the event and make it available to ticket buyers until Sunday March 14 at midnight.

  • All three levels of government currently make up precisely 0% of our annual operating budget.

  • We surprisingly are not current beneficiaries of any of their covid emergency programs.

We hope you will be together with us in the spirit of Liberation and support our artists and our vision.
