Toronto City Opera is looking for new board  members!

If you always wanted to explore your passion for opera from the inside, this is your chance. You can be part of the team that builds on our decades long legacy, and steers Toronto City Opera forward into the post-COVID era. We are a hands-on group that like you loves opera and are determined to make it flourish in Toronto and beyond. You can learn more about our mission, artistic vision and program at this link.

We are looking for Board members who, working collaboratively with each other and with the artistic team, can contribute their skills and experience in any of the following roles:

 

Marketing

TCO exists to perform for audiences. We are looking for capabilities that would both nurture and steward our current audience and expand it to include not only all opera lovers in the Greater Toronto Area but also those who may be new to opera. We want to hear from you if you have any of these capabilities:

  • Strong connections with communities that are traditional opera goers

  • Expertise in publicity and earned media

  • Hands-on experience in audience development and group sales

  • Expert in digital marketing and social media. TCO currently uses MailChimp and is active on Facebook and Instagram

  • Skilled in event planning for fundraising

  • Know how to create a big impact with limited resources

 

Fundraising

TCO today relies for its funding on the generosity of its donors, ticket sales and chorus registration donations. We want to expand and diversify this funding, so we can both grow our programming and our support to our artists. We want to expand our funding to include:

  • Increased corporate sponsorship

  • Increased foundation support

  • Carefully targeted government grants and support

We also want to enhance the stewardship of our existing donors without whom we would not exist and bring on new donors. If you have experience in any of these areas, please get in touch.

 

Secretary

The Secretary is an Officer of the Corporation and is responsible for the proper management and utilization of important records such as:

  • Taking and distributing board and annual general meeting minutes

  • Supporting the Chair in organizing board meetings and agendas and timely distribution of meeting material

  • Maintaining the organization’s by-laws and policies as approved by the Board

  • Tracking board member terms and contact information for the board and management

  • Updating necessary government records such as the Form 1 record of directors

A legal background is helpful but not required as TCO currently has a legal advisor. If you are diligent, detail oriented and eager to be part of achieving TCO’s vision reach out to us.

 

As a registered charity, Toronto City Opera can not compensate board members for their board work. This is a volunteer position for a 3-year term. The board meets approximately 8 times a year based on key events in the season. You will be actively engaged in projects commensurate with your expertise including participating on committees.

 

One of the ways directors demonstrate their commitment to Toronto City Opera is through an annual cash donation set by the board of $500, plus support of our performances and fund-raising events through ticket purchases.
