The love, betrayal and revenge of real people stretched to the limits of human feeling by real life. Intense and hauntingly beautiful music.

In a Sicilian village it is Easter Sunday morning. Santuzza is sad and restless. She suspects that her lover, Turriddu, has rekindled things with his former fiancée Lola. Lola is the wife of the cart-driver, Alfio. Santuzza goes to Turridu’s mother, Mamma Lucia, and laments her situation. While everyone goes to church, Santuzza waits for Turriddu. When he comes, he doesn’t pay any attention to her; he only has eyes for Lola, who is singing outside the church. Lola mocks Santuzza and enters the church. Turiddu wants to follow her and Santuzza gets in his way. They argue. Turriddu pushes her away and hurries into church. Santuzza, furiously jealous, reveals everything to the passing Alfio. After Mass, all meet in Mamma Lucia's tavern. There, Turriddu invites Lola for a glass of wine. The outraged Alfio confronts Turriddu. He challenges Alfio to a duel and Turriddu accepts. Turriddu, who has drunk a lot, says goodbye to his mother. Santuzza is tormented by remorse and throws herself into Mamma Lucia’s arms. A few minutes later they hear a horrified woman crying that Turridu has been killed.
